The best Marilyn bio that I have come across
I fell in love with Marilyn through this (back in '92). It was the first Marilyn book I had ever come across, and even now, I still believe it to be the best Marilyn (photo) bio I have read. I am not a deep fan, and I haven't seen every Marilyn book around (there are many), but I have seen enough to say that this is the best, extensive Marilyn biography that I've seen. This book chronicles her life from her childhood to her tragic death. I found it all so facinating to see her grow up through these pictures, from toddler to adult (the way the camera had captured the expressions on her face are astounding). There are no messy conspiracy theories here (I've read enough of those books to recommend everyone to avoid them!). It just writes what was (and is) commonly known, so we aren't left thinking confusing questions that could become dated in years to come. The numerous pictures which make up the bulk of this book will speak for itself. Sensitively written, the paragraphs are captivating to read. I must confess that I had not seen a Marilyn movie before reading this. When I did get to see a few, I thought that Marilyn was beautiful, but I enjoyed this book upon her life, more! I am sad that this is not in current print (just yet). Maybe check it out through your local library first, but if you are like me, you'd want to get your own copy afterwards. It is a book that has held me captivated for a long time. It was very sad - I almost cried when I went through it from beginning to end. It took me ages reading the paragraphs but took even more just studying each picture. It is a sad story. I had always thought that she was a 'bimbo' before, but after reading this, it changed my perception. Her movies aren't what I personally watch, but this Marilyn bio has a place in my heart. I hope every Marilyn fan has/will come across this very special book. The next best book I recommend on Marilyn is the Gloria Steinman one (with pics by George Barris).

Monroeville, AL: The Search For Harper Lee's Maycomb
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (15 September, 1999)
Author: Monroe County Heritage Museums
Average review score:

A must have for all Mockingbird fans!!
While on a trip to the beach, I stopped off in Monroeville to visit the Mockingbird shrine. While there, I bought this book at the museum and was SO excited about the information that was found in it. There are so many similarities between the fictional Maycomb and the Monroeville in which Nelle Harper Lee grew up! For example, Monroeville, like Maycomb, had a strange citizen who got into trouble with the law when he was young and was locked up in his house by his father for years. This young man was never seen outside his house again and was considered a phantom by the town children, including Nelle Lee. The book will be a delight to all fans of the novel. I also strongly recommend a trip to Monroeville -- it will be well worth the time and effort for any true fan.

Charming and delightful!
This book is so sweet and full of inspiration. It takes all of those wonderful sayings that we have heard over and over again and gives them a little history and a lot of humor and sentiment. The illustrations are equally wonderful and bring the whole book together. I just love this book and would highly recomend it to a parent.

The Nineteenth Amendment: Women's Right to Vote (Constitution (Springfield, Union County, N.J.).)
Published in Library Binding by Enslow Publishers, Inc. (January, 1998)
Author: Judy Monroe
Average review score:

Excellent reading about a very important ammendment.
The 1st amendment deals with freedom of speech, press, assembly. The 2nd is for the right to bear arms. We all know what the 5th amendment is used for and the 13th ended slavery. Some know that the 15th amendment gave blacks the right to vote. But do you know what the 19th Amendment did?

Most people will tell you that this amendment to the Constitution was one of the most important, it gave women the right to vote, and understand this is has only been 80 years since that amendment was passed. In this day of equal right, this is simply amazing that women have only been voting since 1920.

The book covers the founders of women's rights movement, like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, to Susan B. Anthony tireless efforts to get the Congress of the United States to pass legislation to give women the right to vote.

You'll read about the suffragetts to marches on Washington to how the 19th amendment effects our lives even to the present day. The book took just over 1 hour to finish and it was easy reading filled with little facts I was unaware of concerning the 19th amendment. Overall a very good book to have as a reference.

The People, the Sovereigns
Published in Hardcover by James River Pr (January, 1988)
Author: James Monroe
Average review score:

An Excellent Read
The People, the Sovereigns is an excellent read for anyone seeking to understand the founding precepts of our government straight from the words of one of our Founding Fathers. The book provides a comparison between ancient civilizations (Athens, Lacedemon and Carthage) and our governmental structure. This a unique piece of writing, written by Monroe after his presidency and never finished - cut short by his death. An excellent work from a seasoned lawmaker, to say the least.
